Calculate your Carbon Footprint / Calcule tu Huella de Carbono

ENGLISH: Carbon footprint or ecological footprint: the amount of the earth's resources that it takes to sustain one's lifestyle.
"In the U.S. we require 22.3 acres of earth's resources to sustain our current average lifestyle while only 4.5 acres would be our fair portion.  The footprint we leave on the earth is too big."  (http://www.earthandspiritcenter.org/)  If we use approximately five times our fair share of resources, what does that leave for others?  How do my daily choices have an impact on someone living on the other side of the globe?

Check out your carbon footprint here.

More info on this topic can be found in Radical Simplicity:  Sustainable Lifestyles for Global Equity by Jim Merkel (2003).

If you have suggestions for other resources -- books/videos/articles/etc. -- please give your comments below. Thanks!

"Watching ordinary people become part of extraordinary movements across the Middle East these past few weeks has made me think: what are some of the lessons for our global climate movement?

... For our movement, it is a reminder that to solve the climate crisis we need more than the power of solar panels and wind turbines: we need the power of people. Today, I'm proud to introduce some of the people on the 350.org staff who will be working with you this year to build a people powered movement to solve the climate crisis."

Using Our Power to Bring About Change

Thanks to Neomi Hayes for sending in this piece of good news which shows that we can bring about change, especially working through groups that promote justice issues.

From the NRDCNatural Resources Defense Council, working to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth.

"Great news: Royal Dutch Shell has announced it is postponing its plan to drill off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this summer.

This is a huge victory for Alaska’s embattled polar bears and other Arctic wildlife that are vulnerable to devastating losses if a blowout were to occur in the frigid Beaufort Sea.

It is a victory that you made possible through your donations, your online activism and your absolute commitment to stopping Shell in its tracks."

Gracias a Ma. Eugenia Noguez por este artículo.

Capítulo 3 del Folleto de la Pastoral Social del Episcopado Brasileño sobre el Cambio Climático. Traducción Ricardo López Rosas

MOTIVACIONES CRISTIANAS

ENGLISH:

In Peru, it is a time for political campaigns, in which the next President of Peru will be elected.  However, among the many topics being addressed, there is little or nothing being said about the environment.  I believe it is not because there is already an excellent plan for educating about environmental issues.  It remains a subject that requires urgent attention.

Rocío Valdeavellano says it is necessary to implement a monitoring system, involving universities, businesses, and the Peruvian state.  These will evaluate and investigate possible sites and areas of the country that will suffer the ravages of climate change, in the medium and long term.  There can be developed strategies that can reduce the social and economic impact in Peru of this global phenomenon.

Featured Resource for an Ecological Lent: "Lent 4.5"

Lent 4.5 is a faith-formation program from the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center to inform Christian communities on how to use the traditional Lenten dsiciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to protect God's creation, bring forth a just society, and nurture a fulfilling spiritual life.  It offers practical opportunities for people of faith to apply the values of Gospel Simplicity to their everyday lives.

Why "Lent 4.5"? If the Earth were divided equally among all of us, each person living on the planet would receive 4.5 acres. Now consider that everything you need - food, energy, home, clothing, appliances, gadgets - must come from those 4.5 acres.   Lent 4.5 offers a new way of observing Lent that helps us care for God's creation and bring forth a just society by taking steps toward using only our fair share of its resources.  Ready for the challenge?  Click here.

It's free / Es gratis

ENGLISH
There were several queries about the cost of this blog.

Here is Mary Henry's response:  "There is absolutely no cost for the blog.  The blog was designed and is serviced by Google, and is a free service available to anyone with a Google account.  The only expenditure has been the tremendous amount of time that Jean Durel has spent in working with the design and monitoring resources for material to be included and posted on the blog.  This is why social media is so effective:  it is available to everyone, at no cost.  Everyone has access to social media; that is one of the reasons it is so powerful - knowledge and information is shared freely.  What could be a more appropriate means for religious women to share their gifts, their ideas, and their passions?"

January 29-30, 2011: Days of Prayer and Fasting to End the Bloodshed in Cd. Juarez, Mexico

January 29-30, 2011 were days of prayer and fasting in Cd. Juarez to end the bloodshed, days which drew people not only from Mexico and the U.S., but from around the world.

CATHY CORNELL:
Forty-eight hours in Juarez.
Fourteen more people were killed in Ciudad Juarez during the first forty eight hours of this week. This is not an unusual toll for Juarez…but one that is more deeply troubling and sad for me now that I have witnessed the life of the people there this past weekend.

Reflection on Bishop Ruiz Garcia's Life by Elizabeth Riebschlaeger, ccvi

I found the following statement to be a key to so much that is happening now in the Church and for the last 40 years:

". . .his remarks against the powerful landlord class were construed by some -- including some at the Vatican -- as originating in Marxist class theory, rather than the Gospel."

It seems strange that a faithful bishop who is inspired by the infallible teachings of the Church in the Second Vatican Council,
